The Zabeltitz Baroque Garden is one of the largest and most significant French-style parks in Saxony that has retained its original layout. Beginning in 1728, the garden was designed in its present form by Johann Christoph Knöffel on behalf of Imperial Count von Wackerbarth. It is laid out in a strictly symmetrical and regular pattern, featuring beautiful avenues of linden and chestnut trees, accompanying hedges, small ornamental woods, roundabouts with sandstone sculptures, and a unique system of ponds. The ponds are fed by water from the “Große Röder,” which is returned to the stream via a canal at the AHA. Between 1740 and 1800, impressive sandstone sculptures—the fountain complex “Riesenkinder,” “Flora,” “Diana,” and “Apollo,” as well as two Greek vases—were installed. At the end of the 18th century, Prince Xaver of Saxony expanded the rear section of the Baroque garden to include the “Wildnis” (wilderness) in the English style.
