Book Museum of the SLUB Dresden

At a glance

The Book Museum of the Saxon State and University Library is a traditional literary museum in Dresden.

From early photographs and parchment manuscripts to musical sources and historical film recordings: The SLUB Dresden Book Museum presents outstanding treasures from the library's diverse holdings. A particular highlight is the permanently exhibited Maya Codex, one of only four surviving pre-Columbian Maya manuscripts in the world.

The roots of the SLUB collections go back to the 16th century, when Elector Augustus of Saxony began to systematically acquire books. From 1835, the most valuable pieces, the cimelia, were presented in a separate room. In 1935, a separate book museum was created, which was reopened after the founding of the SLUB Dresden in 2003.
