Since 1946, Burgk Castle has housed the Freital Municipal Collections. The former Burgk manor was the seat of the noble Dathe von Burgk family in the 19th century and, from 1819 onward, served as the administrative center of the Baron von Burgk Coal and Ironworks. In addition to exhibitions on the city’s history and mining heritage, Burgk Castle presents two outstanding art collections that trace the development of painting in Dresden from the founding of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1764 to the present day: The Municipal Art Collection features nine paintings by Otto Dix and works from Symbolism and Art Nouveau, New Objectivity, and Dresden Colorism. The second exhibition is the Friedrich Pappermann Foundation Collection, featuring works ranging from Dresden Romanticism to the 1990s. The visitor mine in the palace park brings mining to life. An entrance shaft leads into the depths of the mountain and invites visitors on a journey back in time to the mining era of about 200 years ago.The “Burgkania” mining-themed adventure playground offers children and families the opportunity to discover and experience the world of mining through play.
