Dresden's Royal Palace

At a glance

Anchor point no. 18 of the Via Romantika (Castles and Palaces) and Attraction no. 24 of the Via Romantika cultura

The mural that depicts 34 Saxon rulers from the house of the Wettins on 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles is more than 100 m long. The famous “Procession of Princes” is attached to the outer wall of the stables courtyard. It is part of the Dresden Royal Palace that was the centre of power of the Saxon electors and kings between 1485 and 1918. In the 16th century, it was expanded and splendidly decorated. Notwithstanding later renovations and multiple destructions it has preserved its Renaissance character. In fact, even the Sgraffito decoration in the great castle courtyard that once also adorned the outer walls of the building was restored. Today, the royal palace houses some of the most famous museums of the Dresden State Art Collections. Among them the Green Vault, a treasury that ranks among the most significant in the world. The exhibitions of the Armoury invite guests to a journey into the times of Renaissance and Baroque. Here they can admire numerous artefacts that haven’t been preserved anywhere else. Elector Augustus began the collection around 1560. And his successors consequently continued his work. That is why a visit to the royal palace holds many wonders.
