Societaetstheater Dresden

At a glance

Today, the oldest theatre of Dresden is a modern stage for contemporary theatre and concerts.

Theater, concerts, youth and children's theater workshops, encounters and performances - the Societaetstheater in Dresden's Baroque quarter stands for a wide range of art and culture. Founded in 1776 as a civic theater, the Societaetstheater experienced a varied history as an amateur stage and talent factory before disbanding in 1832 after increasing cultural isolation.

After a century and a half of disuse and decay, the building was only rebuilt according to historical models after the fall of communism. In 1999, the curtain opened on the new, now municipal Societaetstheater and since then it has been the venue for countless spoken word, dance, music and puppet productions as well as guest performances for national and international artists - mostly with a contemporary focus.
