The Torgau Castle Chapel is considered the first Protestant church building and was consecrated by Martin Luther himself on October 5, 1544.
At the center of the room is the pulpit, which focuses on the Word of God. Its pictorial motifs and ornate color scheme can be traced back to Lucas Cranach the Elder. The organ rises impressively above the simple communion table, which forms the altar, and underlines the outstanding importance of church music. Johann Walter composed a seven-part motet for the ceremonial inauguration of the chapel, which paid musical tribute to the occasion. The current organ, created in 1994 by master organ builder Peter Vier, impresses with its mid-range tonality, which makes the music of the Reformation period sound particularly authentic.
The chapel is referred to as both the "castle chapel" and the "castle church" - both names are commonly used and testify to its historical and spiritual significance.
The town of Torgau is a stop on the Luther Trail Saxony.
