Meißen: Where the forest tells stories Sometimes you only have to take a few steps to enter another world. In the Meißen city forest, it is just like that: just a stone's throw from the bustling city, an enchanted realm of dense deciduous forests, hidden valleys, and majestic views opens up. A place where nature still sets its own rhythm and everyday life seems far away. The Götterfelsenweg is one of 12 favorite hiking routes in the Dresden Elbland region.

An experience from the start

At the start awaits a highlight for children: the new adventure playground "Forest Castle" with slides, climbing elements, and a small creek. While the little ones romp around, adults can relax and take a deep breath. Then the route leads on a longer walk directly into the mixed forest. Soon the first viewpoint is reached: the Hohe Eifer, with about 210 meters the highest point of the route. From the platform on the edge of the rock face, there is a wide view over Meißen to Albrechtsburg and the cathedral. Behind the platform lie the traces of an old castle site – once a guard post, now a quiet place for hikers.

The main goal of the route, however, is the Götterfelsen. It towers above the Triebischtal valley and carries a distinctive golden summit cross. From here, an impressive view opens into the valley. The black rock consists of pitchstone – a rare volcanic rock unique worldwide in this region. A small plaque on the cross commemorates the foundation of the State School St. Afra – a high school for particularly gifted students and a place with a lot of history.

Pure nature right on your doorstep

The approximately 5-kilometer circular route leads through one of the most beautiful city forests in Saxony. Here grow gnarled beeches and old oaks, chaffinches fly between the branches, and with a bit of luck, one can spot signs of badgers. The Triebischtal landscape protection area is a refuge for many animal and plant species. Along the path, information boards provide exciting insights into nature – from rare birds to the importance of the forest for the city's climate.

A worthwhile detour leads to Königssee, a former quarry. The dark pitchstone walls and the small pond amid the trees create a calm, almost magical atmosphere.

For the whole family

The Götterfelsenweg is easy to walk and also suitable for families with children. There are many rest opportunities, ideal for short breaks or a picnic in the green. At every season, the excursion is worthwhile: in spring, the forest floor blooms, in summer, the leafy canopy provides shade, and in autumn, the forest turns into a colorful sea of hues.

The Götterfelsenweg combines nature, history, and beautiful views – right in the middle of the Meißen city forest. Those who hike here quickly realize: You don't have to travel far to find real experiences.
