The northern section of the Moritzburg Hiking and Riding Circuit is a scenically diverse ride through the northern cultural landscape of Moritzburg. Riders and horses experience a varied mixture of natural forest paths in the Friedewald forest, open fields, pond landscapes and historical sites over a distance of approx. 28 kilometers. This northern circular tour of the Moritzburg Hiking and Riding Circuit can be easily combined with the southern section.
The tour starts east of the castle pond in Moritzburg at the Schloss-Ost parking lot. From the striking wooden horse silhouette, you follow the Große Fasanenstraße for a while before the path changes to the northern side of the canal.
The canal on the right and the extensive areas of the game reserve on the left line the path towards the Fasanenschlösschen. Here you can enjoy impressive views of Saxony's smallest royal palace built in the Chinese style, the Fasanenschlösschen, and not far from it, Saxony's only historic lighthouse on the banks of the Niederer Großteich.
The route then leads northwards over the "Blue Gate", around the historic game reserve, crosses the S80, before running along the Neubauernweg below the Hellhaus hunting star, past the animal observation point and through the Frauenteich nature reserve. This is a great start for nature lovers and culture-loving riders alike.
The route leads past the Mittelteich pond on Kalkreuther Straße before following various narrow and wide forest paths past the Silber- and Köckritzteich ponds into the historic village of Steinbach, which boasts the oldest village church in eastern Saxony. Via the Schulsteig trail and a section of the Saxon long-distance riding trail, the route heads towards the Mistschänke forest inn, a worthwhile place to stop for refreshments with traditional cuisine and a rider's rest area with a tethering area for horses, so that both humans and animals can enjoy refreshments.
At the Neuteich pond, the route continues along winding forest paths through the Friedewald forest, past the Hubertus riding stables with the Reiterstübchen (please note opening times) to another crossing of the S81. Away from the main paths, on often soft forest trails, the route now leads through the hunting grounds of the Wettin princes back towards Moritzburg.
The final section of the northern route rewards you with romantic views of the Moritzburg castle ensemble and the glistening ponds from various perspectives - an atmospheric conclusion to this varied and culturally and historically rich horseback hike.
Please note: On some forest paths, the ground can be soft and sometimes challenging. Depending on the situation, caution is advised, especially at crossings with roads and in more frequented areas.
