The circular tour leads through the charming Moritzburg pond and small hilltop landscape with various views of the baroque Moritzburg hunting lodge, the little pheasant castle or the historic lighthouse on the large pond. Between cultural monuments, meadow paths and soft forest trails, riders can experience the varied nature and cultural history of the Dresden Elbland region. This southern section of the Moritzburg Hiking and Riding Circuit can be easily combined with the northern section.
The tour starts east of the castle pond in Moritzburg at the Schloss-Ost parking lot. From the striking wooden horse silhouette, you follow the Große Fasanenstraße for a while before the path changes to the northern side of the canal.
The canal on the right and the extensive areas of the game reserve on the left line the path towards the Fasanenschlösschen. Here you can enjoy impressive views of Saxony's smallest royal palace built in the Chinese style, the Fasanenschlösschen, and not far from it, Saxony's only historic lighthouse on the banks of the Niederer Großteich.
From here, the tour continues over the dam on the Grossteich and crosses the historic narrow-gauge Lößnitzgrundbahn railroad towards Cunnertswalde. From here, the route is now characterized by a natural meadow and forest landscape. The Froschcafé at the "Oberer Waldteich" campsite in Volkersdorf is a good place to take a break with a hitching post for horses (please enquire about opening times here in advance).
The route continues over the Wetterberg to Reichenberg and then up to Wahnsdorf, where you can find delicious wines and cheeses from the small farm "ZiegenWein" right on the village square (please note the limited opening times here too).
The tour now leads from the heights in Wahnsdorf with a sweeping view towards Moritzburg past meadows and fields to the Dippelsdorf ponds. The Red House is linked to the history of the Brücke artists, who sought inspiration here around 1910.
From here, the hilly Moritzburg hilltop landscape with its open meadows and fields changes into the Friedewald forest, one of the largest forest areas in Saxony. Winding forest paths, some with soft ground, now lead us back towards Moritzburg. And when the trees reveal the view of Moritzburg Castle, romantic views of the pond and castle ensemble follow from several sides before the tour ends at the starting point.
Please note: the ground can be soft and challenging on some forest paths. Depending on the situation, caution is advised, especially at crossings with roads and in more heavily frequented areas.
