Moritzburg Castle

At a glance

Anchor point no. 15 of the Via Romantika (Castles and Palaces) and Attraction no. 16 of Via Romantika cultura

Bigger, more modern and more beautiful. That’s how it was supposed to be: The more or less modest hunting lodge of elector Maurice, in German “Moritz”, became a magnificent castle and hunting lodge under the “Saxon Sun King” Augustus the Strong. The reflection of its perfectly designed, baroque proportions shimmers in the water of the lake on which the stately building stands on its artificial island. Moritzburg Castle is famous for its gilded leather wallpapers, surpassed only by the Feather Room with its equipment of a million coloured feathers that have been woven together very skilfully. Through a forest aisle you get a glimpse of the Little Pheasant Castle, a masterpiece of Rococo. In order to get there you can take one of the many coaches that are always ready for a ride. That horses play a major role in Moritzburg also shows in the Saxon state stud that is located in front of the castle. It is famous for its stallion parades in September but can be visited throughout the year. The “iron horse” also makes a stop at Moritzburg. The historic steam-operated narrow-gauge railway runs from Radebeul to Radeburg every day.

The famous Mortitzburg Festival for chamber music.
