Top things to do in Freital
From art to money
At the foot of the Windberg lies the old manor house and tranquil retreat that is Burgk Castle. It houses two art collections showcasing outstanding works of Saxon art from the 19th and 20th centuries – ranging from Impressionism to the present day. From art to coal, the City Museum traces the history of the town’s development and local mining. The latter can also be actively explored: a mine entrance leads down into the depths of the visitor mine, and the Burgkania adventure playground introduces children to the world of mining. Visitors can discover more than just art, nature and coal treasures: Oskarshausen Leisure Park, for example, offers fun and adventure for all ages.

Hiking and cycling tours
The Windberg is perfect for hiking and offers a fabulous view of the town and the foothills of the Eastern Ore Mountains. The view down into the valley gives a glimpse of the beauty that unfolds along the rushing Weißeritz in the Rabenauer Grund. Cycle and walking paths lead through the still largely unspoilt countryside, past bizarre rock formations. Anyone who comes across stone arch bridges whilst walking through the valley is passing the route of the Weißeritztalbahn: Germany’s oldest steam-powered narrow-gauge railway, which offers its passengers a nostalgic journey on the tracks and through picturesque stations.
