Wilsdruff

Where ruby-red bells ring out

To the west of Dresden lies the charming little town of Wilsdruff. As a gateway to the countryside, it welcomes visitors with a vibrant sense of tradition, enticing aromas and the lovely sounds of a ruby-red glass carillon. These chimes can be heard from the town hall tower on the market square.

Top things to do in Wilsdruff

A feast for the senses and sweet melodies

Whilst the inauguration of the world’s only glass carillon took place in 2003, history had already been made in the tower itself: in 1762, the armistice negotiated here heralded the end of the Seven Years’ War. A visit to St James’s Church, which is older than Wilsdruff itself, takes you back a further 600 years. Travellers of all kinds can recharge their batteries in its Romanesque hall. The museum railway station also offers a glimpse into times gone by. It opens its doors only on request – but when it does, visitors can expect an exhibition on the narrow-gauge network as well as historic carriages, a steam locomotive and handcars. And when the air is filled with the scent of cinnamon and myrrh, the KNOX incense stick factory is at work: here, the world of fragrant wonders invites you to explore.
