Großenhain
Where happiness lies in the countryside
As one of Saxony’s oldest towns, Großenhain charms visitors with its friendly atmosphere, historic treasures – and greenery as far as the eye can see. The towers of the Kulturschloss, St Mary’s Church and the town hall shape the skyline of the cosy old town. They bear witness to the town’s centuries-old history, which you can explore whilst strolling through the historic town centre – for example, in Germany’s first public library, which remains the central hub for bookworms to this day, or in the town museum housed in the ‘Alte Lateinschule’.
Top things to do in Großenhain
A friendly town surrounded by greenery
The Röderauwald, a sprawling nature reserve, nestles against the picturesque wedding village of Zabeltitz. Here, you can happily spend the whole day in the magnificent Baroque garden – one of the largest French-style parks in Saxony. But it’s well worth venturing further afield: the light-filled St Georgen Church treats visitors to a contemplative atmosphere, and a visit to the historic Farming Museum rounds off the exploration.

Active holidays meet a break
It is no coincidence that the town is nicknamed the ‘Friendly Town in the Countryside’: countless parks and green spaces in and around Großenhain invite visitors to relax. The Röderaue is just one example, and thanks to numerous cycle paths and walking trails, it is an ideal starting point for active excursions and a relaxing experience of nature. Whether it’s the enduring traditions, the lively atmosphere of the town or the beauty of the gardens: in Großenhain, the daily grind and the hustle and bustle fade into the background.
