Zeithain
Remember and discover
In the municipality of Zeithain, the beauty of nature unfolds alongside the traces of history. Two ferry crossings in Promnitz and Lorenzkirch also allow visitors to explore the landscape from the Elbe. The crossing to Lorenzkirch is particularly worthwhile in August: that is when the Lorenzmarkt, Saxony’s oldest funfair, opens its gates. Thus, Zeithain is always both: a place of remembrance and a place of discovery.

Top things to do in Zeithain
Versatile
As peaceful as the Gohrischheide is today, its history is a turbulent one. Whilst the first Saxon military training area was established here in 1874, a prisoner-of-war camp was located in Zeithain during the Second World War. The Ehrenhain memorial commemorates its victims with an extensive exhibition. If you rewind history a further two centuries, you arrive at the most magnificent military parade of its time: Augustus the Strong’s ‘Lustlager’. Thousands of soldiers marched here and lavish balls were held.
Hiking and cycling tours
A real treat for nature lovers
The allure of Augustus’s pleasure camp endures to this day: at the Zeithain pleasure camp, historical costumes and military manoeuvres are showcased once a year, whilst the “Pleasure Camp Circular Walk” invites visitors all year round to cycle through the heathland in the footsteps of Augustus. With vast meadows, heather-coloured heathland and sun-yellow broom, the Gohrischheide and Elbniederterrasse nature reserve is a real treat for nature lovers. Those seeking peace and quiet, cyclists and walkers can spot rare bird species, insects and bats along the numerous paths.

Attention!
The Gohrischheide is currently not passable due to a large forest fire and firefighting operations. The cycle routes Gohrischheiderundweg, Röderradroute, Kirchenradweg, and Lustlagerrundweg are therefore not usable in the Gohrischheide area! We will inform you when the danger has passed.
