Altzella Monastery Park

At the end of the 17th century, the Wettin dynasty commemorated their ancestors buried here and commissioned the construction of a burial chapel, which, however, remained unfinished and was not completed until 1794 as a Neoclassical mausoleum. Court gardener Johann Gottfried Hübler transformed the grounds of the former monastery into a Romantic park, either demolishing the remaining ruins or integrating them into the park’s design.

Herb Garden

Since 2013, herbalist Koreen Vetter has been tending to the monastery’s small treasure trove of medicinal plants. The medieval “hortus botanicus” supplied the kitchen and hospital and are considered the precursors to the botanical gardens that became widespread beginning in the 16th century. Following the model of therapeutic beds, Koreen Vetter arranges the herb and plant beds according to their uses: for relaxation, for gastrointestinal ailments, for the heart and circulatory system, or for the immune system.
