Aronia berries in Coswig
One of the last and largest areas in Germany where aronia berries are grown is situated on the banks of the River Elbe between Radebeul and Meissen.
Tens of thousands of cycle tourists pass it by every year on the Elbe Cycle Route, yet hardly anyone knows it: the aronia berry. Originally from North America, the berry belongs to the rose family. It reached Saxony via the former Soviet Union and was first cultivated in Upper Lusatia in the early 1970s. One of the last and largest aronia berry growing areas in Germany is located on the Elbe between Radebeul and Meissen. The health-boosting berries are grown on around 40 hectares near the Coswig districts of Kötitz and Brockwitz.
You can easily reach the aronia plantations by bike via the popular Elbe Cycle Route. The information van, which provides details about the aronia berry, is situated right next to the plantation. It explains the benefits of the berry and is clearly visible from a distance. There, you can pick up information leaflets and also sample products made from aronia berries. Every year there is an aronia festival where you can taste, buy and pick the berries yourself.
