Baroque garden Zabeltitz

At a glance

Magnificent lime and chestnut avenues, hedge groves, pleasure groves and rondels, sandstone sculptures and spacious water areas invite you to stroll in the baroque garden Zabeltitz.

The baroque garden of Zabeltitz is one of the largest and most important parks in Saxony that has been preserved in its basic features according to the French model. From 1728, the garden was created in its present form by Johann Christoph Knöffel on behalf of the Imperial Count of Wackerbarth. It is strictly symmetrical and regularly laid out with beautiful lime and chestnut avenues, accompanying hedges, pleasure groves, roundels with sandstone sculptures and a unique pond system. The ponds are fed by the water of the "Große Röder", which is returned to the river via a canal at the AHA. Between 1740 and 1800 representative sandstone sculptures - the fountains "Giant Children", "Flora", "Diana" and "Apollo" as well as 2 Greek vases - were installed. At the end of the 18th century, Prince Xaver of Saxony extended the rear part of the Baroque garden with the "Wilderness" in English style.
