Courage and powerlessness" exhibition at the Torgau memorial site (Saxon Memorials Foundation)

The permanent exhibition "Courage and Powerlessness" at the Torgau Place of Remembrance is about protest and resistance, persecution and imprisonment for political reasons in Torgau in the 20th century.

The exhibition tells the story of Nazi military justice as an instrument of persecution during the Second World War and of the Torgau military prisons. The focus is on those persecuted, including deserters and other members of the resistance against the Nazi regime. It also deals with the Soviet special camps in Torgau after 1945, and finally with political prisoners during the SED dictatorship. These included young people in the Torgau youth prison. The exhibition introduces those persecuted, shows the conditions of imprisonment, sheds light on the perpetrators and also draws a line to the present day. The exhibition includes impressive objects, media stations, photos and documents. In touching interviews, former prisoners and their relatives talk about the consequences of political imprisonment.
