Zeithain Memorial Grove

Contemporary History of the Zeithain Prisoner-of-War Camp
The memorial honors the victims of the Wehrmacht prisoner-of-war camp in Zeithain between 1941 and 1945. A total of approximately 25,000 to 30,000 Soviet prisoners of war and more than 900 prisoners of war from other countries died in Zeithain. The victims who perished at the camp are buried in four cemeteries. The history of the Zeithain prisoner-of-war camp is presented in a permanent exhibition at the Documentation Center of the Zeithain Memorial Grove and in a former camp barrack.
The memorial, operated by the Saxon Memorials Foundation, serves as an information and educational center as well as a point of contact for relatives of former prisoners of war.

Getting there
Memorial
- Coming from Riesa on the B 169, drive about 10 km toward Gröditz; turn right at the obelisk marked “Gedenkstätte Ehrenhain Zeithain” (100 m past a gas station).
Cemeteries
- The cemeteries where the prisoners of war were buried are, in some cases, quite far apart and difficult to reach by public transportation. If you would like to visit the cemeteries, we therefore recommend that you first come to the memorial site. The staff at the memorial can then provide you with detailed directions and maps showing the best way to reach the individual cemeteries.
