Hartenfels Castle
You can't miss Hartenfels Castle in Torgau with its changing special exhibitions and fascinating, historical charm!
In Torgau, one of the most beautiful German Renaissance towns and the political centre of the Reformation, Hartenfels Castle is a masterpiece of the early Renaissance. The castle fits picturesquely into the townscape and bears witness to an eventful history. In the 16th century, one of the most modern castle complexes in Europe was built on the foundation walls of a castle. The Great Wendelstein and the castle chapel, which was consecrated by Martin Luther himself, date from this period. The latter is considered the world's first new Protestant church building and is an impressive testimony to the Reformation. In later centuries, Hartenfels Castle became part of the Saxon-Napoleonic fortress and later a Prussian barracks. The history of the castle is as complex as it is fascinating, and a multimedia exhibition awaits you on the grounds, giving you an insight into everyday life at the Torgau court.Don't forget to climb the Hausmannsturm for a magnificent view of Torgau. And after your exploration tour, the castle café invites you to linger.Another special feature:In front of the castle, there has been a bear pit since 1624, where three bears are kept in a species-appropriate manner and can be marvelled at by visitors.
