King Albert Monument (Windberg Monument)

King Albert Monument (Windberg Monument)

The 17-meter-high obelisk, which stands atop the Windberg, is Freital’s most famous monument and landmark. From here, you have a wonderful view of ...

On the side facing the valley stands an equestrian statue of King Albert of Saxony (1828–1902). It is intended to honor the Saxon monarch and express the gratitude of the residents of Plauenschen Grund for the military assistance provided during the flood of 1897. On the side facing away from the valley is a bronze plaque bearing the inscription: “Enter this place reverently, O people of Saxony. It is dedicated to the memory of a king who combined German heroism with the loyalty of a ruler and was a leader sent by God to his people.”

Another plaque commemorating Freital’s “black gold” and its miners is located in front of the equestrian relief. It bears the inscription: “Behold, traveler, the valley, how it is filled with ambition. Born of the miner’s diligence, it lives on to this day.”

The monument, visible from afar, was designed by the Dresden architect Max Hans Kühne (1874–1942). The equestrian statue was created by the sculptor Heinrich Wedemeyer.
