Pirna-Sonnenstein Memorial

The Pirna-Sonnenstein memorial commemorates the Nazi "euthanasia" at the historical site. The exhibition and memorial area make the dimension of the Nazi crimes impressively tangible.
The Pirna-Sonnenstein Memorial is located on the grounds of the former Sonnenstein Sanatorium and Nursing Home. It commemorates the crimes of the National Socialist "Aktion T4" at the historical site. In 1940 and 1941, around 13,720 mainly mentally ill and mentally handicapped people and over 1,000 concentration camp prisoners were murdered in a gas chamber here. Due to the number of its victims, this extermination facility is one of the worst sites of Nazi crimes in Saxony.
Today, the memorial invites visitors to come to terms with this history. The memorial area and a permanent exhibition document the events and the fates of the victims. The site makes the dimension of the Nazi crimes impressively tangible and encourages silent remembrance.
