Strehla Market Square

Strehla Market Square

The market square, the town's centre, is a large rectangular space surrounded by two-storey townhouses.

On the lower half stands the old fountain, ringed by four lime trees. The fountain was reconstructed in 1989. Until 1904 it supplied the population's drinking water. On some houses you can still see the large gateways of the former farmsteads of the arable citizens, whose façades are decorated with house marks and keystones over the doors. Keystones often bear craft symbols. In June 1992 the Saxon post milestone column, renewed and restored in 1962 and 1991, was returned to its old place on the market square opposite the town hall.
