Zabeltitz Farm Museum

The Zabeltitz Farm Museum is located in an old three-sided farmstead in the heart of the Zabeltitz district.

Built around 1810, this remarkable half-timbered building was on the verge of collapse when the municipality took it over in 1981; starting in 1982, it was renovated and converted into a future farm museum.

The museum depicts the hard life of a middle-class farming family in the Großenhain district at the beginning of the 20th century. In the past, up to 10 people lived on this three-sided farmstead: the farmers and their children, the farm owner’s parents, a farmhand, and a maid. Today, numerous artifacts from the farming past of the villages around Zabeltitz are on display. The farm complex includes the residential building with living and working areas, as well as a cattle barn, the granary, and, of course, a separate dwelling where the retired farmers lived.

The living quarters are furnished just as they were in great-grandmother’s day. In the farm area and in the barn, numerous old household and agricultural tools are on display.

Modern audio guide devices are now available for rent at the Farm Museum. At 18 stations, visitors can learn about the historic rooms and everyday farm life 100 years ago. In the children’s version, Elsa Händel—who lived on the farm with her family from 1901 to 1930—serves as the guide.
